Understanding VOO’s concentration

VOO is weighted by market capitalization, meaning larger companies make up a larger share of the fund automatically — Vanguard doesn’t set these weights directly. Because a handful of mega-cap technology companies currently dominate U.S. market value, VOO’s performance is more tied to those specific companies than the “500 companies” framing might suggest. This isn’t unique to VOO — any S&P 500 fund, including SPY or IVV, shares the same concentration by definition.

Frequently asked questions

No. VOO simply tracks the S&P 500 index as defined by S&P Dow Jones Indices. Vanguard doesn't pick stocks or set sector weights — the fund's composition is entirely a function of which companies are in the index and how large they are.
