Compound annual growth rate (CAGR)

13.30%

Total growth over the period

86.67%

CAGR = (end price ÷ start price)^(1 ÷ years) − 1. This uses price only — it doesn’t include dividends. For a return figure that includes reinvested dividends, use the main calculator above or the S&P 500 calculator.

Why CAGR smooths out volatility

Real-world returns bounce around year to year, but CAGR collapses all of that into one tidy annual figure by only looking at the start and end points. That makes it useful for comparing investments over the same period, but it hides how bumpy the ride actually was — two investments with the same CAGR can have had very different year-to-year experiences. For a month-by-month projection that captures contributions and dividends over time, see the VOO compound interest calculator.

Frequently asked questions

CAGR (compound annual growth rate) is the single steady annual growth rate that would turn a start value into an end value over a given number of years, if growth compounded smoothly every year. It's calculated as (end value ÷ start value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1.
