VOO Minimum Investment & Fractional Shares
What it actually costs to start, and how fractional shares let you invest a specific dollar amount instead of a whole number of shares.
There’s no official minimum
Because VOO is an ETF, Vanguard doesn’t impose a minimum investment the way it does for some of its mutual funds. In practice, your real minimum is either the price of one whole share, or — if your broker supports fractional shares — as little as $1 or a few dollars, whatever your broker allows. This is one practical advantage VOO has over its mutual-fund equivalent, VFIAX, which has historically required a minimum initial purchase.
How fractional shares work
Fractional-share trading lets you buy, say, $200 worth of VOO regardless of the current share price, rather than being limited to whole-share increments. It also lets dividend reinvestment (DRIP) put every cent of a dividend payment to work, since the reinvested amount rarely lines up exactly with a whole share’s price. Not every broker supports this — check your specific platform’s policy before assuming it’s available.
Model your own contribution amount
Because you can typically invest any dollar amount via fractional shares, our VOO calculator lets you enter any initial investment or monthly contribution amount directly — you don’t need to round to whole share prices to project your results.
